Journey With the Good Shepherd

Psalm 23 is known and loved by religious and non-religious people alike. I once played the piano at a funeral in a local church here in South Africa, and we sang the hymn which contains these words. The minister told me afterwards that the widow had picked Psalm 23 as the reading and hymn because it was the only Bible passage she knew.

I wonder if you have also found this Psalm to be meaningful in your life? It has been recited by many famous actors. It has been sung by many famous singers. But that’s not why it endures - it endures because ordinary people living ordinary lives find something in these words that resonates.

I invite you to journey with me through this Psalm, verse by verse, for the next 3 weeks. There are only 6 verses in the Psalm, and so we spend a few days on each one, reflecting deeply on its meaning in our lives today.

May you be richly blessed, as countless others have been, by the words that David wrote.

Because Jesus

I believe that of all the people we could observe and try to emulate or copy, Jesus is as good as it gets. And in fact, emulating Jesus is truly the ultimate goal of our Christian lives. Some people think the ultimate goal of becoming a Christian is getting to heaven. But there’s so much more to it than that! God’s desire for us is transformation – transformation into the likeness of Jesus.

This devotional booklet is called Because Jesus. Just like the young child says because Jimmy did XYZ, I also did XYZ; we’re going to spend three weeks looking at how because Jesus did XYZ, we will also do XYZ.

I hope and pray that this will be a special season for you, as you observe Jesus closely and seek to live the same way He did.
